ECOWAS established the West African Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (WENDU) in the Republic of Benin, 5th – 6th April 2017

In line with the ECOWAS Action Plan to address Illicit Drug Trafficking, Organized Crimes and Drug Abuse in West Africa (2016 – 2020), the ECOWAS Commission launched the West African Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (WENDU) in Benin to provide a sustainable system of relevant, valid and reliable data on drug use and illicit drug trafficking. In addition, to strategize on the collection of data, analysis and dissemination of drug related information at the national and regional levels.

As part of its effort to ensure the set-up of this sentinel surveillance network at the national level, the ECOWAS Commission launched the epidemiology network in the Republic of Benin. The launch of this network is to make WENDU operational and institutionalized in Benin so as to contribute to the regional network. In addition, 1) to build capacity of nominated focal points responsible for data collection, collation and dissemination from healthcare institutions on drug epidemiology indicators and reporting techniques; and 2) to identify training needs, assess existing data systems, data sources and gaps with a view to establishing quality information collection mechanisms on drugs (supply and demand) and sustainability of data collection.
