Representatives of ECOWAS Drug Unit at the Sixtieth Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, Vienna 13th – 17th March, 2017

The 60th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) was held from 13th to 17th March 2017 in Vienna, Austria. The ECOWAS Commission was represented at the meeting by two technical staff of the ECOWAS Drug Unit. The purpose for the 60th Session of the CND was to review the progress in the implementation of the Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem, as well as assess its achievements and challenges in countering the world drug problem, within the framework of the three international drug control conventions and other United Nations instruments.

The participation at the meeting provided the drug project team with improved capacity on trends and good practices in drug control for sustainability of actions. The meeting also provided the platform for high level informal engagements, consultations, networking and exchange of ideas for strengthened potentials for financial support in the implementation of the ECOWAS Drug Action Plan 2016 – 2020. The mission further created an awareness of the ongoing anti-drug activities of the ECOWAS Commission including the EU funded project: “Support to ECOWAS Drug Unit advocacy, monitoring and coordination capacities and strengthened the relationship with the UNODC.
