Monitoring and Evaluation Mission to assess the status of implementation of the ECOWAS Drug Action Plan in Gambia, 25th -27th July 2017

The overall objective of the mission was to assess the status of implementation of the ECOWAS Drug Action Plan and to identify areas of challenges of drug control in Gambia.

In addition, to deliberate on modalities of providing support for anti-drug public awareness campaigns/ promotional materials to Inter-ministerial Drug Control Committees (IMDCCs) or equivalents in Gambia.

As part of the monitoring and evaluation process, the team held several meetings with stakeholders such as law enforcements and non-state actors involved in the crusade on illicit drug trafficking, transnational organized crimes and drug abuse.

Key among the stakeholders engaged were the Minister of Interior, H.E. Mai Ahmed Fatty, Deputy Permanent Secretary Ministry of Interior, Mr. Bully Dibba, the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), Prosecution Unit of DLEAG, The Gambia Police Force (GPF), Interpol Banjul Bureau, The Gambia Revenue Authority, The Mental Health and Substance Abuse Unit of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, The Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital, the Department of Social Welfare of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Youth Council (NYC).

These conclaves and site visitation avail the Monitoring Missions Team the opportunity to interact and discuss with stakeholders, the status of implementation of the ECOWAS Regional Action Plan on Illicit drug trafficking, related organized crimes and drug abuse  (2016-2020), challenges and constraints on implementation.
